DOTS & FERNS

Today is my last post for a2z – it’s been such a wonderful challenge for me to have been creating with Hero Arts supplies and the great design team.  Have a trip to Europe planned this summer, my daughter has a new (to her) cabin on a beautiful lake in Minnesota where I plan on spending some lovely relaxing time and also helping her redecorate and finally a high school class reunion to attend in Wisconsin- so no time to keep up with design team stuff.

 ferns

In keeping with the stencil theme challenge this month, I used the Circle Tree stencil (actually a Christmas tree) to selectively add the gold embossed circles to the watercolor background.  The background was made with Ranger picked raspberry distress ink on an acrylic block, misted with water and smooshing with a piece to Canson watercolor paper.  I used a dauber to add Versamark on the stencil and then embossed with Ranger liquid platinum.  The ferns were stamped onto a piece of vellum, embossed and fussy cut.  Layered it all and added some gold thread and few sequins.  Thought this card could be used for many different occasions so a sentiment will go inside when needed.

There’s still time to enter the April stencil challenge so get out those stencils and create a gorgeous card to enter – and maybe be the winner of a $25 gift certificate to the store.  If you want to purchase anything from the store, you can get 15% off – just use code BETTY15. Many thanks to a2z for the opportunity to be on my first design team.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAG

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAG

Since I don’t have a polka dot stencil, I used the Borders stencil to make the pale tomato sponged dots on my MFT stitched tag.  Pretty easy to line up and I just masked off the other borders on the stencil with some wide post-it tape

happy tag

Used pale tomato shadow ink for the Night and Day flowers and forever green for the leaves from Stamp Your Own Plant set. These were all just fussy cut.

Cut the “happy” sentiment from the Happy Cut and Stamp set and the “birthday” is stamped with Versamark and embossed with HA white embossing powder.

Before assembling my card, I mixed a little pale tomato, butter bar and soft cantaloupe inks with water and spattered it for a background. Added a few very old HA sequins from my stash and done.

The Stencil It In challenge lasts all of April so get out your favorite stencils and enter – and maybe win a $25 gift certificate to get some goodies from a2z Scrapbooking.  You can use Coupon Code BETTY15 for 15% off your order of $25.00 or more (before tax and shipping) at the a2z store.  Did you know that we are on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook?.  Follow us on these different social media outlets so you won’t miss out on any fun promotions.

STENCIL EMBOSSING

STENCIL EMBOSSING

Today I have two cards both with a stencil embossed background. It is quite subtle but gives just enough texture to make the card a bit more interesting.

grey dogwoodpink dogwood

For both cards I used Hero Arts Antique Butterfly and Flowers Framelets set, a sentiment from Messages with a Flourish embossed with HA white embossing powder with the dogwood flower stamped with HA soft granite shadow ink.

I used my Cuttlebug to emboss the backgrounds with this sandwich – bottom up – C, B, tan mat, cardstock, stencil, B and two pieces of thin cardboard as a shim – ran it back and forth twice.

On the first card I used the Tweed stencil and on the second one the Elegant Pine stencil. The pink flower was colored with Copics.  Also die cut the flower again in black as a extra layer for definition.  Black seed beads in the flower centers give a little more texture also.

Try your hand at stenciling in various ways – there are tons of ideas out there for all kinds of methods. Then when your gorgeous cards are done enter them in the a2z challenge for April – and you could win a $25 gift certificate to get some goodies from a2z Scrapbooking.

VINTAGE BUTTERFLY

Since we’re still on the challenge of coloring, I did a little watercolor background for my card today and then did some more coloring on the butterfly.  The Nineteenth Century Script was stamped in distress antique linen, the ferns from Stamp Your Own Plant in distress peeled paint and shabby shutters, and the little postmark and clock face in distress gathering twigs.  The butterfly was colored with Memento markers – desert sand, new sprout and bahama blue.

Spring Bouquet

Decided to carry on with the Copics for this month’s a2z challenge of “Color It In”.

yellow flower

I die cut the two larger MFT stitched rectangles and stamped the Night & Day flowers on the white background.  Used Copics Y15, 17, & 19 and YG 62, 63 to color in the flowers and stems.  On the yellow rectangle I used butter bar mid-tone shadow ink to make a matching border with one of the smaller flower stamps from the set.  Added some seed beads to the flower centers and the “hello” from Hello Stamp & Cut.  A simple card but a nice one to have on hand.

EMBOSSED BUTTERFLY

EMBOSSED BUTTERFLY

The challenge theme this whole month has been “emboss it”.  I had never embossed with a stencil so decided to give it a try with the Rain Dance stencil.  Several years ago Shari Carroll had a video at Hero Arts explaining the technique.  I didn’t use the same sandwich as she did but it came out the same.  I used my Cuttlebug with this sandwich – bottom up -A, C, B, tan mat, card stock, stencil, B and then 3 layers of thin cardboard – worked just fine.  Then I laid the stencil back on top of the embossed area and rubbed HA pale tomato shadow ink over just the center section.

You can see the embossing much better in the closeup.  The base (3 3/4″ x 5″) for this had already been cut with MFT’s stitched rectangle die.  I stamped the butterfly (HA 657773 – no longer available) in Ranger liquid platinum on vellum and then fussy cut.  Then I took the pale tomato ink pad and rubbed it over the back of the vellum.  This took forever to dry so finally used the heat gun on it.  Added some wire antennae before attaching it and then the gold bits.  This whole section was put on the base with foam tape.

If you hurry there’s still time today to join our Embossing Challenge for February – and remember, you can use Coupon Code BETTY15 for 15% off your order of $25.00 or more (before tax and shipping) at the a2z store.  a2z has just received the 2015 Hero Arts release so you can get your new “wants” right now at a discount!!  Did you know that we are on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook?.  Follow us on these different social media outlets so you won’t miss out on any fun promotions!

LEAFY VINE HEART

One more Valentine before the big day tomorrow – just in case you need a quick idea for a last minute card! The theme for this month at a2z is “emboss it” so make a card to enter using this inspiration!  You could win a $25 gift certifcate!

heart

To create my card I first die cut the heart from Spellbinders Classic Heart die.  On a scrap of white stamped the HA leafy vine in Versamark and embossed with HA white embossing powder.  Rubbed HA red royal shadow ink over the embossing and used a baby wipe to remove some of the ink from the embossed parts.  That piece went behind the open heart.

Mounted that on HA carnation layering paper and then onto the card base which is Neenah astroparche.  Embossed the sentiment on a piece of vellum in Ranger liquid platinum and adhered with some Aleene’s clear gel glue – I just put little dots of it behind the letters and it holds really well and doesn’t show – this is my favorite way for adhering vellum.  Also like this glue because it never clogs – ever ever!  Added a few HA clear gemstones (love these – the perfect little accent) and done and dusted!!

Hope you’ll join our Embossing Challenge this month – and remember, you can use Coupon Code BETTY15 for 15% off your order of $25.00 or more (before tax and shipping) at the a2z store.  a2z has just received the 2015 Hero Arts release so you can get your new “wants” right now at a discount!!  Did you know that we are on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook?.  Follow us on these different social media outlets so you won’t miss out on any fun promotions!

Sending You Love

Valentine’s Day is coming soon – so here’s card to inspire you!!

First I stamped the sentiment, embossed and die cut. Then sponged on some pink ink to coordinate with the paper. Had the paper I used for the background in my stash for ages. Die cut the hearts and added sending lovesome Versamark around the edges – added the embossing powder and brushed some of it off so it would look more random. The little heart on the sentiment was also embossed and added over the flower that’s on the stamp.

The sentiment tag was popped up on some foam tape and then the hearts layered and tucked in behind. Added some clear gemstones and done.

Winter Butterfly

I am so pleased to be a part of the a2z Scrapbooking design team and wanted to try something new with my Hero Arts butterfly die for my first post, which is perfect for our January Challenge.

This past week Jennifer McGuire had a video showing how to make a “no bulk shaker card”.  I basically followed her instructions but did my own variation.

First, I made the background for my card by inking up the HA circle lace stamp with Ranger weathered wood distress ink.

Then I spritzed it with water and stamped on watercolor paper and repeated doing this until the paper was covered.  If some areas were too dark, I just spritzed with a little more water and then let it dry.

After trimming my paper to 4″ x 5 1/4″, I die cut the butterfly.

Next I added double-sided tape all around the edges of the butterfly on the back of the card and positioned on a piece of acetate.

Sprinkled on some sequins, removed the backing from the tape, placed on another piece of acetate to sandwich in the sequins and then added all to the card base.

Repositioned the die cut butterfly on top by only adding glue down the center, added some more sequins and done.  I purposely didn’t add a sentiment as I wanted the emphasis to be on the butterfly – and any sentiment can be added to the inside – or not!

Take a look at my card:
