Still casing designers with Hero Arts Digi Download “A Natural Holiday”

Yes, Delia again, maybe ever so slightly late.  Super sorry, life just got a little busier than normal for me – life changing things even.  Okay, so, I have gone Christmassy, so early, I know!  I am not a big Christmas fan, never have been once I grew up I guess.  I love it if it is all about family and getting together and having fun, but if it is about presents, presents and more presents, then I am not so interested.

il_570xN.640981594_iam3

Hero Arts have some super digital downloads and quite a few for Christmas too and some for Halloween, that hopefully will be next month.  I used the Hero Arts Digital Download A Natural Holiday and cut out the elements on my Silhouette Cameo on some chipboard, white gessoed them and then I painted the big tree after cutting it in half with Nuvo wax pastes in blue and then the other elements I embossed mostly.  However, before I stuck things down I rummaged through my very small stash of Hero Arts stamps and I found this set and used the corner flourish with black Hero Arts ink and stamped it in a circular pattern around where the snowflake would sit – can’t see it anymore though!

IMG_9100

It is hard to see all the elements that went into this design and I struggle with that.  However, if I want to successfully case Ola, I need to get far better at layering and being comfortable with elements being covered up.  It just seems so wasteful if you cannot see and appreciate every element.  Is that just me?  There is a gorgeous snowflake that I cut out that comes from the Silhouette store, I painted this dark blue with Nuvo wax pastes and put some Hero Arts silver embossing powder on the edges outside of the photo area.  I then made my photo matt and adhered some sparkly white and silver fabric I had around it in a ripple effect, raised this area up on a few bits of cardboard and I was ready for ephemera.

This set of digital images is well designed for cutting, you need to be a bit delicate with the Merry Christmas words.  I actually chopped these apart as they come joined.  One difficulty I keep finding, is trying to find a good dark blue flower, but I found a few that sufficed and I guess I can always paint them! hehe  I always finish off my designs with a bit of bling and so I used some silver flat back pearly things, Finnabair art stones, glitter, microbeads and various little fingernail decorations and mix them all up with some gel and water and decorate.

All done for this month, take care all, be safe, I am off on my new life adventure, so not sure when I will be back, but hopefully late next month.

Smiles, Delia

Casing Ola again with Hero Arts Pretty Blossoms Digital Download

Hi again, I hope your September is going well. I am still in my infatuated with Ola Khomenok stage and so once again I chose another of her fabulous designs.  This is a link to her video tutorial.IMG_8501

So, here is my layout in response to our current ‘Case a Designer’ challenge this month.

Jacobi-scrapbookpage-a2zseptno2e

The papers are some new ones I just got under the DCWV brand that have some lovely foiled copper pages throughout which allows you to make some beautiful embellishments to use in your design.  I wanted lots of different types of embellishments in my layout to make up for some of the amazing elements Ola has to use.  My main frame is from Dusty Attic which I embossed using green, pink and copper embossing powders.  My use of the Pretty Blossoms Digital Download played a large part in my use of ephemera, I printed them out on white card and then painted them roughly with some cheap glitter paints as I only wanted the colour to be subtle, cut them out and then added pearls and sequins or whatever into the middles to make them have a little bit of bling.  I do love my bling.

il_570xN-1.633673409_6g90

There are quite a few die cut pieces, but these are from dies collected over time and removed from their packaging, but obviously you just use whatever you have in  your stash and bring it all together, building up layers and then finishing up with a few more bits of shiny stuff.  All done, seems so simple, but it honestly takes me about 3 days to do a layout like this.  I am quite sure that I spend the most time just staring it and wondering what to do, what to use, trying to remember everything I have in my stashes. But, if you watch Ola, she just throws it all together, so quickly and effortlessly.  Clearly I need to practice more …. ohhh, if I have toooooo.  Like, my pleasure, hehehe.  I have done a few of these layouts now, to see more of them, please visit Jacobi Creations or my Jacobi Creations Blog.

That’s all for now, have a lovely week.  Delia

Casing a Designer with Hero Arts Feathers

Happy September all.  Delia again, with another take on using digital files, while also keeping it in the theme of “Case a Designer”.  Well, I have a few favourite designers, but at the very, very top is a most amazing lady called Ola Khomenok, she is from the Ukraine and her work is amazing, lots of layers, colours and just bits and pieces.  She uses loads of stencils initially when building up her page and then she makes what she does look sooo easy and it truly does my head in.  I watch her videos over and over again and am always left in awe of her talent.  I am trying very hard to emulate her style at the moment which I call “collage style”, but it really is just “Ola style” as she has a truly beautiful talent that I am actually very jelly of.  Aaaagh, but it is always good to have those that push us to be better.  I am not sure what my issue is in my difficulty in trying to emulate her style, but I think it has a lot to do with wastage.  I am frugal when it comes to using my large collection of flowers, chipboard, ephemera and bits and pieces as it all costs lots of money and I just don’t want to waste it – even though it isn’t really wasting it.  I know that Ola is on some major design teams and would be showered with product and deservedly so, but that is not reality for most of us and so I am very considered when I put my layouts together.  I also am just not yet as talented as she!

Jacobi-scrapbookpage-a2zsept1

So, here is my layout using the Hero Arts Feather Digital Cut file, which has the most awesome feather shape ever!  Clearly that was my hero in the layout, but I had lots of fun with this layout.  Firstly, I put the feathers through my Silhouette machine and then out came the Nuvo wax pastes in various colours and painted them and then I foiled them and sealed the foil off.  May I say how tedious foiling is…. those fiddly things and me are not the greatest of friends.  I truly did hide behind the door when patience was handed out.  So, I had a bit of fun with colouring and things, building up the layers, adding more and more bits and pieces, until all finished.

That’s all from me until another week passes when I shall return with another ‘Case a Designer’ layout, which will probably be all about Ola.  She is my current challenge and I am not giving up until I can learn her skill and put it in my repertoire.  So, be kind, be good and enjoy your inner creative.  Please visit me at my website www.jacobicreations.com or my blog at jacobicreations.blogspot.com.au

Hero Arts Poetic Petals Digital Download used 3 different ways! No. 2 of 3.

If nothing else, digital products certainly allow you to use things over and over again in different ways.  So, I thought, what a super opportunity to highlight using digital stamps in a multitude of ways.  Earlier this month I used this same digital stamp kit Hero Arts PT004 Poetic Petals in a hybrid fashion where I printed, coloured and cut them out and created a layout that fit the Bright and Beautiful theme quite beautifully.  A week later, I am back with another bright and beautiful layout using the flowers in a digital format.

A2Z Aug21layoutflat1

Digital designing is fun as you get to use things again and again, plus you can tweak the colours to match perfectly.  Flower colour not quite right, just adjust it and it is perfect and being able to digitally manipulate elements is just cool.  It is very important to remember to put a drop shadow on everything, otherwise it all can look flat and just not quite right.

To create this layout, I once again used elements from various purchases from Sweet Shoppe Designs.  I do apologise that I do not know which packs they are from as I have split them up and grouped things together to make it easier for me to find elements.  Firstly I created my paper layers and then used one of each of the flowers on each panel, duplicating them up and colouring them a little darker.

Once that background was created, I then built my ‘layers’ up using various elements, leaving room for a picture.  I then went and got one of the flowers and went back to the background panel and used it like a stamp around all the elements, but in the background.  Some final gold sprinkles which I also sent to the back so it sits atop the background.

The final result, bright and beautiful once again and it is just gorgeous and fun to do.  Much quicker than hybrid scrapping that is for sure.  I do urge you to try digital scrapbooking if you have not done so already.  Even a great option for travelling and then you can put it together into a book and have that printed out as a lovely gift for family at Christmas.  So many options.  I use photoshop, but you can use a multitude of programs.  Pixlr is a free online program that you can use.

Anyway, have a super month everyone, be kind, be generous and be creative.  I shall see you in a week with another layout using this same digital stamp set.  Not sure what I am going to do …

Hero Arts Poetic Petals Digi Stamp Download makes for colouring fun.

Jacobi-a2zscrapbooking-august1

Hello again all, happy August and all those things.  So the theme for this month is Bright and Beautiful and so how could I possibly go past the Hero Arts Digi Stamp Download Poetic Petals.  It was made for this page.  I printed out the flowers at all different sizes and then got out the colouring implements and went to town.  My hands that have arthritis were not so impressed, but my brain had a good time, as well as the mental therapy that goes with colouring in.  Off goes my mind, happily thinking, dreaming, imagining and before you know it, I am surrounded by colourful flowers.  Now that I had them all, I had to chop them out.  I am not one for fussy cutting – it does my head in, but I am quite skilled with a scalpel from my graphic design days.  I remember once that I cut out an intricate spiders web by hand.  I got this done and then had to allow the hands to rest, so I amused myself with helping my daughter with assignments and then blitz cleaned the house.  No rest for the wicked.

So, I have all my elements and then the nice mailman brought me happy mail and in it some cutting dies from China as I do love to use the internet to shop.  So, I cut out some little seeded branches and painted them with Nuvo mousse pastes.  I then cut out these half moon doily shapes and used Nuvo wax pastes to colour these also, using two different tones.  I then dug through my ephemera and found some Kaisercraft pieces that fitted in nicely, plus some flowers from various sources.  I am a mad flower collector/purchaser.  I cannot ever have enough flowers.  Is that the case with all creatives?  Surely not just me.

I started with a lovely blank canvas and applied clear gesso as I knew it was about to get soaked.  First of all I stencilled the background as Lindy’s Magical Shakers work better with some texture to get into, plus I was going to do a completely different layout to what eventuated.  You can still see a teeny, tiny bit … hehe.  Out come Lindy’s Magical Shakers and I used dark blue, purple, orange, yellow and red, just little sprinkles all over.  I have pictures below so you can see how it goes from zero to hero in seconds.  Gosh, they are so much fun to play with.  I love that I used no green and yet, there it is.  Groovy baby.  If you have not tried them yet, you simply must, they really are quite magical.

After all that dried, it looked so awesome it was a shame to cover it up, but I had all these amazing and colourful flowers to use and use them I did.  I laid them out to look like a bouquet of sorts surrounding the photo area, most sit flat with some raised up a little.  At this stage the layout was looking very flat and I prefer layouts with layers and height, so I mounted the photo up a little higher on cardboard, put a yellow frame around it and then used a circular cut die embossed with silver embossing powder over the top, situated so the photo can easily be slipped in.  I then snipped my half moon doilies so that I could bend them and get some dimension happening and then decorated with some ephemera and flowers.  The main word “smile” has been made to look a little 3-d by using Glossy accents 3-d gel which gives it a lovely raised, high gloss finish.  A really lovely product.

Below are some close ups of the final layout, with a little bit of silver sparkle to finish it off.  I think it is pretty enjoyable to use digi stamps, they just add a new dimension to layouts, rather than using the normal ephemera.  Enjoy your creativity, to see more of my work, please go to my website at www.jacobicreations.com or follow my blog at jacobicreations@blogspot.com.au.

Digital Layout with Hero Arts Artistic Circles

Hello All.  Thanks for stopping by A2Z scrapbooking.  Today I have a completely digital layout for you which was actually a bit of a blast from the past for me as that is how I initially got into scrapbooking.  Being a graphic designer, it seemed a natural way to go, however, I then started looking at the hybrid way of doing things and now I have a craft space filled with all sorts of goodies.  I love crafting the hybrid way, but it is also quite fun to do it digitally, especially with these lovely digital files from Hero Arts.  This is the Instant Download Hero Arts Artistic Circles DK044 Digital Kit.

a2z July Layout flat

When you purchase this kit and download it, you will find that there are some little extras included, such as papers, some tags, a clip, snowflake and a pearl.  Firstly I grabbed the papers and created my background.  I used photoshop to create this layout, but there are a number of programs one can use or use a free online program called pixlr.  The same as creating in a hybrid way, this works by layers and is what makes the use of shadowing important.  If shadowing is not used, the layout will look very one dimensional and flat.  In came the beautiful panel of circles which I used in the background paper panels.  You can adjust the colour of the background circles or on any of the digital elements or you can make them different levels of transparent.  I then used the large circle as my main focal point, however I needed it thicker.  I did that, placed it in position and deleted the circle pattern behind this circular area, simply so it did not look confusing or too busy.

On went my photo panel, which led me to wanting a few more elements.  For this, I dived into my old stash of online elements bought from various packs from Sweet Shoppe Designs.  There is an endless supply of digital elements available to use along with the Hero Arts digital products on this site, combining them together makes for a really lovely layout.  So I found some ribbon, lots of flowers, sentiments, buttons and other bits that bring this layout together.  Remember, when working digitally, you can adjust the colouring on things so they match your layout perfectly.  As I mentioned earlier, I used the little pearl that comes as part of the the Artistic Circles Digital Kit from Hero Arts.  Everything has a shadow on it as this helps to make it more realistic and not flat, which is really important to the overall finished look.  I hope you like it and if you haven’t tried doing digital scrapbooking, do try, as it is quite fun and a really great way for those to scrapbook that are on a budget or low on space.

Digital Stamping with Hero Arts Vintage Travel DK002

Jacobi-scrapbookpage-a2ztraveldigi1small

Hello all, Delia from Jacobi Creations here with my first post as one of the awesome DT members at A2Z scrapbooking.  I would like to share with you today a travel themed layout using the Hero Arts Digital Stamp Collection Vintage Travel DK002 Instant Download.  To be honest, this was my first time using digital stamps, I didn’t really understand how they worked, so, I love a challenge and off I went.  It is all pretty simple really, seems that it is just another version of clipart, so import digital files into your favourite digital editing program, I used photoshop and manipulate how you wish.  There is a great free online program that works just like photoshop called pixlr that can be accessed easily enough for those that do not have anything readily installed.  You can use Word if you are really desperate.

Once you have the image/s sized how you like, print them off and colour however you prefer – there are so many options.  I actually used my Chameleon pens because they are just cool and the way they shade is groovy, but you can ink them, use pencils, pastels or any kind of medium, paint them or not do anything.  You can colour them on the computer in some programs prior to printing them out.  When colouring by hand just be aware of the quality of the paper you are printing on and how much it can endure.

tv13

Once the images are how you like them, cut them out, ink the edges in brown ink to help give an aged look and now they are ready to be used just like normal ephemera.  This layout uses all 13 digital stamps from the Vintage Travel range.  Doing layouts is about the enjoyment of creating to achieve the finished product, there is no right way, there are things to take into consideration, but your imagination is key.  Try things, if they work, they work, if they don’t, they don’t.  I often find that creativity can look worse before it looks better.  Just a weird thing, I regularly get to a point and think, hmmm, not sure this is working or quite right, but push through and then it ends up looking awesome.

To create this layout, I used a very old Kaisercraft paper with a travel theme/map to it, covered it in clear gesso to help it stay flat and did some postmark stamping with black ink.  The first image I worked with is the map, I printed this out just under A4 size and then went over the grey lines with a brown coloured pen (I deliberately made the image print grey over black so I could trace over them), I then used brown ink with a dauber to colour the paper and give it an ‘old’ look.  I decided to make it into a scroll, so a bit like a treasure map.  I remember doing an assignment in school where I did this and burned all the edges to make it ‘authentic’.  So, I smoked up the craft room by burning the edges, but in the end, a dark brown ink was just as effective.  Use a pen or paintbrush handle to curl the top in one direction and the bottom in another, then mount on a few pieces of cardboard so it sits right up off the page.

Insert the ephemera around your image area, decorate with flowers, metal trinkets, buttons or whatever divine things you might have in your stash.  I always think about the many things associated with the topic and use them if room allows.  Tickets, bits of things collected on the travel journey could be included, a mini hat, some ribbon, little charms – soo many options.  Here are some close ups, hope you like it.  smiles, D
